How to Install a Tower Crane: Step-by-Step Guide for Malaysian Construction Sites
Installing a tower crane is a critical process in any high-rise construction project. Whether youβre building a residential development in Kuala Lumpur or an infrastructure project in Johor or other states, a properly installed tower crane ensures safety, productivity, and compliance with regulations.
In this guide, we share the essential step-by-step process for installing a tower crane safely and efficiently β based on our experience at Profile Fleet Service Sdn Bhd, Malaysiaβs trusted tower crane specialist.
π Step 1: Site Assessment and Planning
Before any installation begins, the project team must:
- Conduct a site survey and soil analysis
- Determine the type of tower crane (hammerhead, luffing, or flat-top) required
- Decide on freestanding or climbing configuration
- Identify crane position, considering swing radius and interference with nearby structures or cranes
- Obtain approval and PMA certification from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH)
π Step 2: Foundation Construction
A solid foundation is crucial to ensure crane stability.
- Cast a reinforced concrete base pad, designed based on crane load data
- Install anchor bolts or a fixing angle embedded into the foundation
- Allow time for concrete curing before further installation
π Step 3: Base and Mast Assembly
- Position the base mast and secure it to the foundation bolts
- Add the climbing frame (if required for internal climbing cranes)
- Stack mast sections one by one using a mobile crane
- Ensure proper alignment and secure bolt torqueing
π Step 4: Slewing Unit and Jib Installation
This stage forms the heart of the crane.
- Install the slewing unit and operator cabin
- Mount the jib and counter-jib
- Install counterweights at the back for balance
- Connect electrical and control wiring
π Step 5: System Setup and Calibration
- Set up load moment indicator (LMI) and limit switches
- Install anti-collision and zone protection system (if multiple cranes / restricted boundary)
- Run function checks for final commissioning
- Provide operator training and safety briefing
π Final Step: JKKP Load Test, Safety Inspection & PMA Approval
Once installation and internal testing are complete:
- A JKKP (DOSH Malaysia) officer will attend the site to conduct a formal load test and safety inspection
- The officer will ensure all safety measures and structural integrity are in place
- After successful inspection, the officer will issue the PMA certificate
- With the PMA approved, the tower crane is officially cleared for operation
